Senior Accountant

Job Description

Small biotech west of Boston is looking for a Senior Accountant that will be responsible for a variety of accounting functions, including month, quarter and year-end close, account reconciliations and financial reporting & analysis. The Senior Accountant will also be responsible for overseeing the procurement and accounts payable process.  Additionally, this position will work closely with the Director of Finance to support SEC reporting requirements and the annual audit & quarterly reviews, in addition to the budgeting and forecasting processes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

General Accounting and Financial Reporting: 

  • Performs monthly accounting procedures including journal entries, supporting schedules, analyses, and documentation
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly account reconciliations to ensure accurate reporting
  • Prepare accurate, timely financial statements in accordance with established schedule
  • Analyze financial statements for discrepancies and other issues that should be brought to the attention of the CFO and Director of Finance
  • Support annual audits and quarterly reviews
  • Prepares workpapers and schedules for the year end external financial statement audit
  • Assist in the preparation of U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) reports, including 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K, Proxy Statements, and other filings
  • Conduct periodic maintenance for ERP general ledger platform
  • Ensures compliance with finance and accounting internal controls and continuously look for ways to improve quality and efficiency
  • Assists with research into accounting guidance as well as supporting documentation to identify the appropriate accounting treatment
  • Prepares analysis between actual results and budget/forecast
  • Provided periodic guidance to Accounting Intern and office administrator
  • Support program management and special projects, as needed

Accounts Payable

  • With support of Office Administrator, manage aspects of Accounts Payable, including vouchering, vendor setup, and payment processing
  • Work closely with business owners to ensure invoices are recorded accurately to facilitate meaningful budget to actual financial reporting
  • Daily AP vouchering – approximately 25-30 invoices per week 
  • Obtain and organize appropriate invoice approvals 
  • Generate weekly AP check runs and wire payments 
  • Generate monthly AP accrual for invoices not received 
  • Corporate Card reconciliation, vouchering, and payment 
  • Generate and analyze the AP aging report on a weekly basis 
  • Oversee procurement process including requisitions/purchase orders and shipping and receiving.

Manage and process payroll: 

  • Process payroll and administer benefits for all employees 
  • Create bi-weekly payroll journal entries 
  • Reconcile payroll registers to general ledger 
  • Support payroll related audits
  • Respond to 401k administer requests 

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting with at least 4-6 years’ experience 
  • Strong aptitude to research technical accounting matters
  • CPA is preferred, but not required
  • Functional experience in ERP financial modules; Syteline experience a plus
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and other Microsoft products
  • Proficiency processing payroll in major platform such as ADP or Paychex
  • Experience in life sciences industry preferred
